I wanted air filter which can be maintained. I found pipercross air filter online for 40 eur. You must clean it every 30 000km. Stock filter is recommended to change every 30 00km and it costs aprox 20-30 euros. K&N costs more than 70 eur.

Air filter x3

It also looked like engine can’t get enough air into it, because I have it stage 1 remmaped.

For bmw x3,e90 2.0d code of this filter is PX1429. It should also fit in some other vehicles.

https://www.thepipercrossshop.co.uk/pipercross-unique-performance-panel-filter-height-377mm-x-internal-1085mm-px1429_p23352269.htm

This is what should be benefits of a filter from pipercross:

How will a Pipercross panel filter benefit you?

  • Directly replaces the air filter in your airbox
  • 30% more airflow over a standard paper air filter
  • Longer lifespan before cleaning required over cotton
  • Easy cleaning, no dirt caught like with V shaped filter grooves
  • Bench tested for improved fuel economy, power and torque outputs
  • Lifetime warranty on all replacement and performance road use

Instalation of a filter is the same as a stock filter, excepts it is really hard to fit on housing of a filter housing. I don’t know why it is so tight, maybe to seal better.

Regarding performance, it is hard to tell, but I think it is better. I’m having some issues with a dpf and I didn’t do any testings, but I think it pulls harder. Maybe I will do some testing in a future.

Sudden loss of power and black smoke from my diesel. WTF!? I connected scan tool and get dtcs. OK I will disconnect a MAF and buy new MAF some other day. Well I wasn’t that lucky, same issues. Time to use tow service again. After a while car didn’t even want to start, that was total shock. I have 210 000 kms on my “reliable” BMW. I guess I won’t buy another BMW soon. German cars are just a pile of shit nowadays, Scotty Kilmer is right!

Readings was that car doesn’t get enough air, I removed pain in the ass solution DPF and still no power. Of course DPF was full of soot. Pressure at high rpm was 600mbar, 250 is normal, but this didn’t solve the issue. Dirty diesel.

So I removed intake, of course again full of soot and I clean it ones a year. So I found soot everywhere. EGR stucked, flap didn’t move smoothly. Shocking amount of soot in my intake valves.

Bmw soot

I also removed timing cover, because I was in doubt to remove cylinder head from the car, that would bring me more work and at least 130 eur of costs for parts. Found 2 injectors seals were bad. I spent 1 hour to get one injector out. If i run test all injectors are in tolerances in ISTA. I removed glow plugs to check compression of the  motor.

Bmw soot

After cleaning it all shit from ECO egr dpf diesel I used 4 EGR soot cleaners! A lot of brake cleaner and a lot of soap for cleaning my hands. BMW nightmare. BMW will save a planet and make your family starve to death.

And reasamble this BMW M47N2 masterpiece back and car runs now smoothly, for now 🙂

Things I did:

– replaced injector seals

– replaced valve cover gasket

– checked turbo

-cleaned MAF and MAP sensors

-cleaned intake and replaced seals

-repaired flap

– cleaned and checked EGR

– checked all injectors

-checked engine compression

A lot of work. Final conclusion is that must be sticky valve because of the soot. I’ve seen some needed to remove the cylinder head.

Just imagine, how it can be eco friendly car if it doesn’t get enough air for perfect combustion? In that time car poluttes more than diesel without dpf and egr valve. And all chemicals needed for cleaning that shit. Very environmently friendly. All they care is money!

I was tired my old casual silver rims. New rims cost a lot, so respraying them was a wise solution.

Cleaned up rims

First I cleaned rims good with wheel cleaner. Iron x or K2 roton are good solution in combination with  brush and pressure washer.

Then I sanded them with sand pad to remove all the dust from brakes. I also used dremel tool to removed scratches.

After rims were cleaned I sanded them with 500 and 800 sand paper with water and soap mixed.

Then I protected them with tape and some newspaper.

With filler I repaired small scratches and sanded it with 500 sand paper.

Then it was time for aluminium primer. One can was enough for all 4 rims. Make sure you spray it in thin layers and leave it for 4 hours.

Painted rims

At local shop I bought 3 dcl of acryl paint, I choosed bmw wa22 paint. I didn’t want my car all black.  I sprayed with a gun, because it was cheaper, I could also use spray cans.

It was time to spray them. I mixed paint with thinner (1 dcl paint : 1 dcl of thinner) .

Sprayed very thin layers, first edges and holes. I needed to paint some internal part of rim, because otherwise it was seen from outside. I sprayed 4 layers of paint.

I left them dry for 1,5 hour and than it was time for clear coat. Clear coat protects a paint. It is must on a wheels. It also gives paint more depth.

I mixed 2 dcl of paint and 1 dcl of hardener and I added some thinner.

Painted rims

Sprayed thin layers of clear coat again I think that  4 layers. Then let them dry for 2 days, although they were dried in 4 hours.

Here is a result. I’m quite satisfied with result.  Be aware that prep work is everything when you are painting something.

At some point your diamond shaped bmw key will stop working. Or it will be battery or maybe something will brake in it.

The cheapest way is to cut it in half and replace broken parts. Then you can purcashe  battery and key fob on ebay for few eur. Just solder it back.

Bmw key repair

This is with old key with new case from ebay, I didn’t want to cut new key so I used old one and glue it with some epoxy

Bmw key repair

If you use old key case, just glue it back with epoxy or something similiar and leave it over night.

Bmw key repair

In some case you need to program it. On my x3, you put key in to position 1 and take iz out, than press and hold unlock button while pressing lock button 3 times.

As you may heard bmw have a lot of problems with shaking brakes. You feel it when you brake at speeds around 100 kmh or less on your steering wheel. I replaced rotors and pads when they were worn, but I still had some shaking.

There was no play when you grab and pushed a wheel. No strange knocking under it, just shaking when I braked.

And here is troublemaker:

bushing

There were some small cracks, but nothing looked to bad. I purchased bushing from Meyle, Meyle HD is heavy duty improved version of a stock bushing. It is also called hydrolager, because in stock  there is fluid in it.

meyle hd

Jack it up and first you need to remove plastic bottom covers and tyre. Than unscrew nut from ball joint. Don’t unscrew it all the way yet.

Bmw X3 bushing

Take a hammer and put some taps on the arm and hope for the best 🙂 I had to use a very big hammer even there was no rust. On one side it was total night mare. I had to heat it, used some wd 40 and even used bigger hammer. When arm falls to nut leave it there and unscrew bushing on the front frame.

You will need a lot of power and 21mm wrench.

Bmw X3 bushing

Remove bolt and unscrew nut on the ball joint.

Bmw X3 bushing

It is easy if you have a hydraulic press, otherwise it can be a pain. You must align marks on bushing and front arm, there are 2 arrows. It should be the in the middle of the arm.

Bmw X3 bushing

Then you install it back. Tight a bushing at ride height, I’ve read a lot and  all are saying that shoud be tighten at ride height. You can just lift it with hydraulic jack on the brake disc to ride height and tighten it.

And you’ve done it. Now test drive and hope for the best 🙂 Hope is everything if you own a BMW 🙂

Here is one good one:

Here is video, how you can replace brake pads and rotors on your BMW.

If you own a bmw you know that transfer case is one very sensitive thing, especially on x3 or e83.

You should replaced every 60 000 km, but this is how it looks on my after 1 year or 15 000 km.

Bmw x3

You need 0.7 liter of oil, bmw original oil costs a lot, so alternative is ravenol oil tf-0870.

Bmw x3

To change it you don’t need anything except 16mm wrench. First you unscrew bottom drain screw and than fill it up with pump or injection. When it is start to leak from top screw you fill enough oil in it.

Bmw x3

After that you must perform adaption with bmw dis or inpa tool. You can purchase it on ebay.

There is nothing better than seeing painted valve cover when you pop up the hood. This is from nissan primera p11 2.0. Sprayed with temperature resistant paint. First cleaned with degreser and scoth brite pad .
